Microprocessor Control in Prosthetics and Orthotics

The purpose of this session is for participants to understand technology, identify patients, support rehabilitation and care plans, insurance coverage (pricing, coding), and practical aspects of use (maintenance, costs, etc). Microprocessor control has made recent advancements in technology and insurance coverage. This brief presentation reviews the current state of technology in prosthetics and orthotics (O&P), its application to patient care and rehabilitation, Medicare updates, and the practical implications of daily microprocessor technology use for patients. By the end of this presentation, the learner will have a better understanding of microprocessor technology as the new standard of care in O&P.   

Emotional Adjustment Strategies for Individuals Experiencing Vision Loss 
Presenter: Miriam Hermoso, MSW, ASW, Jeremy Hill, MSW,
ASW, and Hannah Thomson, MSW, LCSW, from Braille Institute 

This session explores emotional and social adjustment for individuals experiencing vision loss and techniques to help increase coping and resiliency. With more than 7 million people in the United States living with vision loss, understanding emotional impacts and support strategies is an important treatment consideration in holistic case management services.  Presenters will focus on emotional recovery issues, including adjusting to a new vison loss diagnosis and impacts on identity, navigating isolation, and seeking social engagement.  Presenters will discuss targeted support for regaining independent living skills, including resources related to reading support, low vision occupational therapy, adaptive technology training, and tools for daily living.  Emotional and functional recovery for vision loss promotes cognitive health, independence, and quality of life. It is an important treatment consideration to improve client outcomes. 

Advancing Continuity of Care in Hepatic Encephalopathy 
Presenter: Nancy Skinner, RN, CCM, CMGT-BC, ACM-RN, CMCN, FCM

Today, the delivery of healthcare interventions may become fragmented without a consistent focus on fostering an efficient transition of patient care as the patient experiences his or her unique patient journey. Patients may be challenged by an inability to comprehensively understand their diagnosis, implement all aspects of the continuing care plan or, even, realize which provider will guide their care as they transition through the healthcare continuum. One group that may experience many of these challenges are those who have been diagnosed with hepatic encephalopathy (HE). This presentation will focus not only on the challenges faced by patients diagnosed with HE but also on the steps the transitional care team might employ to effectively manage this complex brain dysfunction and support the patient throughout their healthcare journey.
